THE JESUS ENIGMA - The Real Jesus revealed

This book challenges Christianity’s fundamental doctrines relating to Jesus Christ the son of God. Evidence is presented revealing that the early church doctored the New Testament to suit its own political and social agenda. The mission of the real man behind the Jesus myth, his family connections and  attitudes, is unveiled by highlighting passages of “primitive text” buried in the four gospels.

Also, the God of the Old Testament, Yahweh, is proved to be just another of the many pagan Gods of his times who also had a wife or consort who was worshipped alongside him. The     author believes the loss of this female deity and the restrictions placed on female participation in our religions has created an unhealthy gender distortion in our spiritual worship and further emphasizes that point by exploring the many legends  surrounding Mary Magdalene.

Paul the apostle is given a thorough revision that challenges accepted scholarly views. This book makes the claim that his letters were extensively edited before they found their way into the New Testament. Paul’s original teachings are reconstructed and found to be at odds with the claims of the Christian church.

1        Introduction

The primary purpose of this book is to explode the myth of Jesus Christ, the son-of-god. Whilst carrying out the necessary research for the book, I have also turned up much information relating to the Old Testament and the god, Yahweh. This book now has a secondary function, and that is to bring to the attention of people, the nature of the god called Yahweh and the mythological and historical accounts surrounding his worship.

Most people of the western world have worshipped Jesus Christ, the son-of-god and his father, Yahweh, for almost two thousand years. For two thousand years, anyone who dared to question this worship risked his or her life and, indeed, many millions of people have been put to death to safeguard the teachings of Christianity.

Just why the all-powerful God that created the universe, a God in whom I passionately believe, should require mere human beings to protect it has never been adequately explained to me. Any robust system of philosophy that is able to stand on its own two feet is quite capable of withstanding any verbal attack. However, a religion based on myths and distortions of the truth requires the perpetrators of the myth to be constantly vigilant, lest the light of reason expose them. This is why the Christian religion has been taught and spread throughout the world with a Bible in one hand and a sword or gun in the other.

The perpetrators of the myth know that deep down, they are vulnerable to the truth as expressed in the historical documents we have available to us. Even though these historical documents have been heavily edited by the church during her political reign following the Council of Nicea in 325ACE (After the Common Era), enough remains to piece together what actually happened two thousand years ago. Bible scholars, both secular and Christian, have been able to delve back into the past and present the world with startling revelations about Jesus Christ, the son-of-god and his father, Yahweh. Scholars are almost unanimous in their finding that the Bible is not historically reliable and that most of the stories about Jesus are a re-telling of older stories that have their origin in the pagan son-of-god myths.

Who is Yahweh?

Did the Jesus Christ depicted in the New Testament actually exist?

Who was the person that came to be called Jesus, the son-of-god?

What motivated him to do the things he did?

Who wrote the Bible and from where did the material come?

These are the fundamental questions, among many others, that this book seeks to answer. There are so many books on the market that deal with these issues that one may wonder why I should bother to write another. This book has been written because I have yet to read a book that gives a full answer to the question; who was the real Jesus? All the information I have been able to uncover over the foremost part of my life has dealt with the question in one of five ways or combinations of them:

1.       That Jesus was really the son-of-god. These authors tend to be committed Christians, often trying to convince themselves as much as anyone else. In the scholastic world they are known as ‘apologists’. That is, people who tend to simply ignore the historical inconsistencies and the very obvious pagan myths pressed into service by the New Testament writers. They also ignore the passages in the gospels that do not fit the picture of the wise healer/saviour son-of-god. Or, they admit the inconsistencies and pagan roots, but nevertheless arrive at the conclusion that Jesus was a special case and was indeed the son-of-god without giving any real grounds for holding this belief. In the end, for them, Jesus, son-of-god is a matter of faith.

2.       That Jesus was part of a very special Jewish family whose bloodline extended back to King David and that he was married to Mary Magdalene. The claim is made that he had some children by Mary. Some authors argue that Jesus did not die on the cross but somehow survived and ended up either in France or England or even in Kashmir. These authors usually disregard the very rigid Roman method of execution by crucifixion and tend to use the gospels as historical accounts of what actually occurred. As I will demonstrate in this book, crucifixion left no room for mistakes and the gospels are not historically reliable; more particularly, those parts concerned with the death and resurrection of Jesus.

3.       That Jesus was a revolutionary. Some authors suggest that Jesus was a revolutionary but somehow still portray him as being of special significance and that he is worthy of being worshipped as the son-of-god. Others simply follow the revolutionary line and fail to explain how this leader of a revolutionary movement came to be thought of as being the son-of-god. Certainly some sources try to bridge the gap but invariably there are huge holes in their arguments and many questions are left unanswered.

4.       That Jesus was an Essene. The Essenes were well-respected members of the Jewish community that retreated into the desert to remain ‘pure’ and await the coming kingdom of god. They were known as teachers and healers. Some authors suggest they were also peaceful and so tried to make their Jesus a peace loving healer/teacher by suggesting he was an Essene. These ideas are best described as wishful thinking.

5.    That Jesus did not exist. These writers quite rightly point out that most of the New Testament writings can be traced back to Cynic, Stoic and Gnostic philosophy; the wisdom sayings of the era and the son-of-god myths current at that time. In taking this view they ignore, or are unaware of, passages in the gospels that clearly run counter to the Jesus the church is trying to present to the world. If the entire New Testament was based on pagan myths and philosophy, plus the biased editing of the church, then these passages should not be there. But they are! And they need to be explained.

There are also two other issues in the Jesus debate that have yet to be, to my knowledge, analysed to any great degree. Firstly, why did the Jews persecute their own Jewish people, whom we know as the early Christian church? And secondly, why did Saul/Paul change from being a devout Jew to proclaiming that Jewish heritage was not important? These are crucial questions that deserve an in-depth answer.

Given the above criticism of other works, I have tried to write a book that answers all the questions I have asked about Jesus over my lifetime, believing that most people would ask similar questions. I believe most of the conclusions found in this book approach certainty. It is, of course, impossible to be totally certain, but it is possible to show just how unlikely the events as portrayed in the New Testament are, and that the available data points towards other explanations. Some conclusions in this book are necessarily speculative. Unfortunately for all lovers of the truth, an overzealous early Christian Church has systematically deleted important information pertaining to some events from the historical record.

I state openly and honestly that I am not a Bible scholar, nor do I want to give the impression that I am a Bible scholar. I have tremendous respect and admiration for those who have devoted entire lifetimes to Biblical studies - I am not one of those. This book is written for the person in the street who wants to understand the origins of the Christian religion and find out who the real Jesus may have been. Reading this book may unlock a new interest that may lead the reader to their own search through the more scholarly works now obtainable through most bookshops. I know that by writing this book I risk becoming unpopular, particularly with certain sections of the community. It is a sobering thought that, not too long ago, I would have most likely ended up being thrown into prison, or tortured and burned at the stake simply because I dared to tell the truth as I understand it. Even in this day and age, in our supposedly enlightened society, I listened to an interview with an American Christian Bishop who also ‘tells it as it is’. He said that he has received death threats; not from ungodly heathens but from Christians! It is also sobering to remember that the Catholic Church’s Inquisition is still operating in modern times. It now has the much-sanitized name, The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and until his election as Pope in 2005, Cardinal Ratzinger, headed it. The head of the organisation is known as the Prefect; a sanitized version of the older title; Grand Inquisitor. The existence of the inhumane, murderous, Inquisition into modern times and the political activity of Christian fundamentalists in western governments throughout the world should sound alarm bells wherever freedom of speech is cherished. If I have a fear in life, it is that religious fundamentalists will once again engage in a bloody war and bomb the entire human race back into the dark ages.

Both Christians and the followers of Judaism understand their god Yahweh through the various books of the Bible. This book challenges established teachings of both religions but does so through a reassessment of the Bible text. In other words, all I have done is to highlight those areas of the Bible that people generally gloss over or have not thought to put under critical analysis. Or, worst of all, they ignore those texts because they do not suit their purpose. If the highlighted Bible text and my conclusions regarding that text seem shocking to you then I can only suggest that you carry out your own research and come to your own conclusions. But please, let these conclusions be based on solid evidence and not some airy-fairy notion that having faith is sufficient.

If, in the end, you do not agree with the contents of this book then God bless you. You have a right to your opinion. But please do unto others as you would have them do unto you and grant me the right to hold my opinion. When all is said and done, I firmly believe it matters little, in the eyes of God, which religion or philosophy we adopted whilst living our physical lives on Earth. I firmly believe we are spiritual beings having a physical experience and that there is room in God’s many mansions for all people, no matter which religion they choose to follow or even if they be non-believers. Regardless of who you are or what you may or may not believe; if and when you turn your eyes towards the light of God, that light will respond to you with compassion and understanding. And should you choose not to turn to it, God will wait!

I accept that Christianity, properly practiced, is capable of leading an adherent towards God. But I see no reason why the world needs to continue to accept myths as fact. Humanity is not served in this way. Neither is Christianity served by shielding Christians from the truth. And, most certainly, God is not served by telling lies about it. There is only one way to worship God and that is in spirit and in truth. Being ever mindful that what is considered truth today may turn out to be false tomorrow. That should not be a problem. If this God, whom I believe in, is real then all that will happen is that as we learn more about our existence, we will also learn more about the wonders of the infinite mind that has caused our universe to come into being. God will not change – we may simply have to change our view of God. I have spent a great deal of my life trying to find the truth behind Christianity and the god called Yahweh. Those years of learning have been gathered together in this book. I hope and trust that it will be of benefit to you.

Note: I have used two versions of the word ‘god’:

1. When I am obviously writing about the ‘one and only God’ that created the universe I will capitalize the word thus: God.

2. When I am writing of any other god the word will be written in lower case except, of course, when the word appears at the start of a sentence or appears in a quote from the Bible. Naturally, there were times when it was difficult to decide which should be used.

I do that to try and maintain respect for what I consider to be ‘God’. The God that is ineffable; beyond all description and definitions. The omnipresent, omnipotent God whose immanence is contained within the universe and whose transcendence manifests beyond all physicality. In other words; the unknowable God behind the smokescreen of the physical universe.
